 In medieval times, there was a simple way to distinguish between the gentry and the hoi polloi.
Simply, a covered head meant respectability and an uncovered ones stood for commoners...."shock"!!. As a result, head gear was and still is much sought after.
Fortuntaly the head-wear discrimination war has ended (phew, I here you sigh).
